Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Wants Toll Roads Into Disney World

RON DESANTIS CONTINUES DISNEY HARASSMENT, WANTS TO ADD TOLL ROADS INTO DISNEY WORLD

Ron DeSantis has himself quite the spiraling feud with Disney that isn’t likely to stop until he is out of office as governor of Florida.  Maybe feud isn’t the right word.  That implies an equal motivation between two parties to attack each other over a long period of time.  It might be better to describe the situation as DeSantis’s need to assert his authority and use his power to punish a critic (Disney) to score the most points with the conservative right.  DeSantis hasn’t had too much luck attacking Disney so far.  But his latest idea is to put tolls on the roads leading into Disney World.  Oh, and to raise hotel taxes.  A lot.

DO DISNEY WORLD TOLL ROADS, HIGHER HOTEL TAXES HELP THE STATE OF FLORIDA IN ANY WAY?

The toll road idea makes it clear that this is now personal for Ron DeSantis.  Nothing is too small or petty at this point if it will make things harder for Disney to do business and make him look authoritative to conservatives.  But the strategy seems somewhat shortsighted, to say the least.  Disney employs a lot of Floridians, and generates a lot of tourism dollars for the state, to boot.  Does hurting their business help the state of Florida?  The question answers itself.  And let’s talk about a Republican governor raising taxes at all.  That’s not a good look, nationally.  And raising taxes on all hotels in the state?  Will that help local businesses and tourism?

DESANTIS PRESIDENTIAL PROSPECTS SEEM TO DIM WITH EVERY AUTHORITATIVE POWER GRAB

Ron DeSantis wants to be president of the United States, while Donald Trump is still the pulse of the Republican Party.  And while Donald Trump attacks nebulous or weak targets to score political points, DeSantis has picked a fight with a veritable goliath in his own state.  And so far, riding a donkey and jousting the Disney windmill isn’t proving to be a good look for DeSantis’s political prospects locally or nationally.  The company knows this and has dug in hits heels with foundational spikes.  And this latest idea of toll roads into Disney World will likely be another troll under the bridge for DeSantis on the way to the White House.
