Major Protest: BBC Suspends Football Host Over Immigration Tweets

BBC SUSPENDS POPULAR FOOTBALL HOST OVER IMMIGRATION TWEETS, MAJOR PROTESTS FOLLOW

Gary Lineker is a very, very popular Football host across the pond in the UK.  So it’s been shocking news to many that the BBC has suspended him from covering the “Match of the Day” yesterday over his critical tweets about recent Tory immigration policy.  The BBC essentially gave him two options: retract your tweets or suffer the consequences.  The popular football host chose the latter, the BBC suspended him, and now others are engaging in a major protest of the broadcaster, the “Match of the Day,” and the sport itself.

FOOTBALL HOST GARY LINEKER ACCURATELY COMPARED NEW TORY POLICY TO 1930’S GERMANY

So what happened?  What is the new immigration policy?  Well, it’s frankly the kind of policy that American conservatives would love.  It bans anyone who arrives illegally in England from ever receiving asylum, and is the brain child of xenophobic politicians who like claiming that illegal immigration is a major problem in the OK.  In a nutshell: it isn’t.  And many people who arrive illegally seeking asylum only have the option of arriving illegally.  They are the ones most in need of asylum.  Lineker reacted to the new policy with a tweet that said it was, “not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s”.

FOOTBALL HOST’S SUSPENSION FOLLOWED BY MASS WALKOUT OF OTHER COMMENTATORS, PLAYERS, COACHES

For one, he’s totally correct.  For another, it’s what anyone with a decent conscience that’s remotely informed would say.  So he did.  The BBC suspended him after he refused to retract, and the situation spiraled more out of the broadcaster’s control.  Not only did other hosts walk out in protest, the possible replacements did as well.  As did the related play-by-play commentators, and players and coaches from the Premier League.  Then the protest spread to other BBC sports programming as well.  This story will clearly continue to develop, so stay tuned.

Just not to the BBC.
