Women in England Denied Transvaginal Exams for Being Virgins

DOCTORS IN ENGLAND DENY WOMEN TRANSVAGINAL EXAMS FOR BEING VIRGINS

There are issues with traditional patriarchy in medical services that simply won’t go away in the West.  The latest example of this is in England, where a number of women have been denied receiving transvaginal exams from their doctors because they are not sexually active.  In other words, doctors have told these women they can’t receive the exam because they are virgins!  A 30-year-old woman at Croydon University Hospital received this offensive response just last week, after honestly telling her doctor that she wasn’t sexually active and never has been.

LAW DOESN’T GIVE DOCTORS ANY RIGHT TO DENY TRANSVAGINAL EXAMS

But this doctor and others who have denied their patients basic health care may face sanctions of some kind.  In England, the ultrasound guidelines clearly state that transvaginal examinations have to be provided, regardless of whether patients (women) have ever had penetrative sex.  The issue (pun intended) hearkens back to the idea of “purity” when it comes to women.  And some doctors seem attached to the idea that if no man has ever been there before, the vagina is a sacrosanct entity that they cannot violate, even to provide what is now basic healthcare for women.

ONE WOMAN DENIED SCAN 6 TIMES, PRESUMED A VIRGIN FOR WEARING HIJAB

But there is a racial component as well.  One woman who wears a hijab had 6 different health care professionals deny her the transvaginal scan because they assumed she was a virgin.  So for her, she was patronized twice over, 6 times.  The situation in England must be addressed, as women are now in the position where they will have to lie about being heterosexually active at best.  At worst, the doctor may simply decide their virginity is a fact and deny them the scan regardless of the law.
